There Is No Apple Vision Pro 2: The Real Story of the M5 Refresh

There is no Apple Vision Pro 2. Apple has never used the name, never unveiled such a device at WWDC 2026, and as of September 2026 has never shipped one. What Apple did put on sale was a mid-cycle refresh of the original headset: the same industrial design, the same $3,499 launch price, an M5 chip in place of the M2, and a new Dual Knit Band. It arrived by press release on 15 October 2025 and reached shelves on 22 October 2025. No keynote. No new name. No 2026 launch.

The gap between that and what people believe is wide, and it is worth closing, because the wrong version travels well. Search for "Vision Pro 2" and you will find spec sheets promising 450 grams, an M4 Pro chip, "8K micro-OLED" panels, six hours of battery and a $2,499 price tag. Not one of those figures is real. Most of them are real figures borrowed from somewhere else: a cancelled product, a Mac chip, an analyst note about a different headset entirely.

The claims in circulation, next to reality

Side by side, the pattern gives itself away.

What Apple actually shipped in October 2025

Apple's press release is titled "Apple Vision Pro upgraded with the M5 chip and Dual Knit Band", which is an unusually honest headline for a marketing document. That is precisely what the update is. The enclosure, the Light Seal system, the EyeSight front display, the external battery, the optical inserts and the price structure all carried over from the February 2024 original. Two things changed: the silicon inside, and the strap on the outside.

Pre-orders opened on 15 October 2025 in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the UAE, the UK and the United States, with mainland China and Singapore following on 17 October. Retail availability began on 22 October 2025, and South Korea and Taiwan were added later. Apple's vice president of worldwide product marketing, Bob Borchers, supplied the usual launch line about spatial computing becoming more capable and more entertaining. Nobody at Apple called it a second generation.

The Dual Knit Band is the visible half of the update, and it goes after the single most common complaint about the 2024 headset: the Solo Knit Band pushed the entire mass onto your cheekbones. The new band uses 3D-knitted upper and lower straps in a dual-rib structure, with tungsten inserts in the lower strap acting as a counterweight, and a dual-function Fit Dial that adjusts both straps at once. Small, medium and large. It is genuinely better on the face. It also adds weight, which is why the current headset is heavier on paper than the one it replaced.

The real specifications

Here is what Apple publishes on its own technical specifications page for the current model, as of September 2026:

• Chip: Apple M5 with a 10-core CPU (four performance cores, six efficiency cores) and a 10-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, plus a 16-core Neural Engine. The Apple R1 coprocessor is unchanged and still handles sensor fusion at 12-millisecond photon-to-photon latency.
• Memory: 16GB unified memory with 153GB/s of bandwidth.
• Display: two micro-OLED panels totalling 23 million pixels, 7.5-micron pixel pitch, 92% DCI-P3 coverage. Supported refresh rates are 90Hz, 96Hz, 100Hz and 120Hz.
• Sensors: four eye-tracking cameras, six world-facing tracking cameras, two high-resolution main cameras, a TrueDepth camera, a LiDAR scanner and four inertial measurement units.
• Audio: spatial audio with dynamic head tracking and audio ray tracing, a six-microphone array with directional beamforming, and an ultra-low-latency H2-to-H2 link to AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C), AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods 4.
• Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. Not Wi-Fi 7, which matters if you plan to stream a Mac display wirelessly over a busy network.
• Storage: 256GB, 512GB or 1TB.
• Weight: 750–800 g (26.4–28.2 ounces) with Light Seal and counterbalanced Dual Knit Band, depending on configuration. The external battery is a further 353 g.
• Battery: up to 2.5 hours of general use, up to 3 hours of video playback, and it can be used while the battery is charging.

Apple's performance claims for the M5 model, measured against the M2 model, are narrow and specific: 10% more pixels rendered on the micro-OLED displays, refresh rates up to 120Hz for reduced motion blur, Apple Intelligence features running up to 50% faster in system experiences and up to twice as fast in third-party apps. Believable numbers for a one-generation silicon jump. They are also not the kind of numbers that make somebody who already owns a Vision Pro sell it and buy another.

The battery is the part no chip can fix

Apple says the M5 model extends battery life, and it does: 2.5 hours of general use against roughly two hours on the 2024 model, and three hours of video playback. Now look at that figure honestly. A device that costs more than a MacBook Pro runs for about the length of one film, off a 353 g pack that sits in your pocket on the end of a cable.

This is the structural problem with the whole product, and it is why the invented "six hours" figure is so revealing. Six hours would change what the Vision Pro is for. It would make an all-day work session plausible. It would make a long-haul flight plausible. It would justify the enterprise pitch Apple has increasingly leaned on. Two and a half hours does none of that.

No amount of process-node improvement closes that gap either, because the constraint is not the efficiency of the SoC. It is the energy density of the cell and the thermal envelope of a device strapped to your face. A genuinely next-generation headset has to attack the physics, and that means moving mass off the head entirely.

The price went up, not down

If you have seen $2,499 attached to this headset, it is wrong in the wrong direction. On 25 June 2026, Apple raised the price of the Vision Pro rather than cutting it. The 256GB model went from $3,499 to $3,699, the 512GB model from $3,699 to $3,899, and the 1TB model from $3,899 to $4,199.

This was not a Vision Pro decision. It was part of a price rise across Apple's whole line, driven by the cost of memory and storage components. Demand from AI data centres has bid up DRAM and NAND worldwide, and Apple said publicly that it had never seen component prices rise this much this quickly. Tim Cook, then still chief executive, told the Wall Street Journal roughly a week before the change that increases had become unavoidable. Macs, iPads, the HomePod and the Apple TV all took increases too; reporting at the time noted the Apple TV 4K jumping from $129 to $199. iPhone and AirPods pricing was left alone.

The Vision Pro was hit harder than most, because it is one of the most memory-dense products Apple sells: 16GB of unified memory and up to a terabyte of storage, in a device with no expansion and no cheaper tier to fall back on. So here is where it stands in September 2026. A $3,699 headset, nearly a year past its last hardware update, sold in roughly a dozen markets, with no announced successor.

visionOS 27 is where the actual 2026 news was

Apple announced visionOS 27 at the WWDC keynote on 8 June 2026, released a developer beta the same day, and scheduled the public release for autumn 2026. It runs on both the M2 and M5 Vision Pro. If you were expecting hardware from that keynote, you were expecting the wrong thing: WWDC 2026 was software only, across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27.

The features Apple showed on stage were modest but useful. Panoramas shot on an iPhone can be converted into spatial scenes and set as immersive Environments, which quietly solves the "I have run out of Environments" problem better than any single new Environment Apple could author. There is a new Icelandic Thórsmörk Environment with a night-time aurora variant. Apple Maps Flyover was improved. Windows in Safari, Freeform and Apple TV Multiview can now curve. Control Center was redesigned into a three-panel layout, notifications expand when you look at them rather than requiring a pinch, and extra-small accessory widgets arrived for battery, timers and smart home controls.

The Siri rebuild is the big one, and the most conditional. visionOS 27 introduces the new large-language-model Siri as a floating orb you can place in your space and address by looking at it, plus Visual Intelligence, which lets you ask questions about objects in front of you. Apple positioned this as launching "later this year". As of early September 2026 that is a promise rather than a shipped feature, and Apple's record on Siri timelines over the past two years argues for patience.

Underneath the keynote sits a substantial developer release, and it gets undersold. visionOS 27 adds a framework for infrared-LED-tracked accessories, so third parties can build tracked controllers and props for the headset, with optical tracking fused with IMU data. There is a higher-frequency object-tracking mode aimed at moving and hand-held objects. RealityKit gained physical space lighting that casts virtual light and shadow onto the LiDAR mesh of your actual room, native Gaussian splat rendering, real-time cloth simulation, and a reverb mesh API that models room acoustics from geometry. Unfoveated 4K screen recording, up to three minutes, finally makes it possible to publish a clean capture of a visionOS app. Wi-Fi initialisation after boot is around three times faster.

That is a serious platform release. It is also a platform release for a device Apple appears to be stepping back from.

The roadmap: no successor before 2028, if ever

So where did the "Vision Pro 2" expectation come from? It has a real origin, and it is traceable.

In September 2025, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo described a cheaper, lighter model, code-named N100 and widely referred to as "Vision Air". He said it would be more than 40% lighter and more than 50% cheaper than the Vision Pro, putting it under 400 grams and under $1,750, targeted at 2027. Read that sentence again, then look at the spec list that circulates for the imaginary Vision Pro 2: 40% lighter, 450 grams, $2,499. A genuine rumour about a different, cheaper product got relabelled as a flagship sequel and moved to a keynote that never featured it.

The rumour itself did not survive either. In October 2025, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple had paused N100 and moved staff onto AI smart glasses intended to compete with Meta's Ray-Ban line. By May 2026 Gurman reported the Vision Air had been cancelled outright. Apple was working on a slimmer, lighter successor, code-named N224, with the chipset reportedly moved into an external puck to take weight off the visor, but he did not expect a launch before late 2028, possibly 2029.

On 3 June 2026, Kuo published a revised roadmap that went further. His earlier roadmap had listed around seven head-worn products. The new one listed two: AI smart glasses without a display, targeted at 2027, and waveguide-based AR glasses no earlier than 2029. Every Vision Pro successor, the Vision Air, and the Mac-paired display glasses were struck off. Kuo attributed the consolidation to incoming chief executive John Ternus and said he thought removing the Vision Pro line was the right call given the mass-market potential of glasses.

Supply-chain reporting since then has pointed the same way. Samsung Display has been reported to be winding down "G-VR", the glass-substrate micro-OLED panel developed for a lighter, lower-cost Apple headset. Two independent reporting tracks, Gurman in the United States and Kuo in the Asian supply chain, now broadly agree: there is no next Vision headset in active development for the near term, and the earliest plausible date for anything is the end of 2028.

One correction to the more dramatic framings. Apple has not said the line is dead. Reporting indicates Apple told employees that Vision Pro and visionOS are not going away and that a new model remains under consideration for as early as the end of 2028, while the near-term priority is glasses. "On ice" is closer to the truth than "cancelled forever".

Layoffs, and a new chief executive who is sceptical

Apple announced in April 2026 that Tim Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus, then senior vice president of hardware engineering, would become chief executive effective 1 September 2026. That transition has now happened. Ternus, 51, joined Apple's product design team in 2001 and had run hardware engineering since 2021. Arthur Levinson moved from non-executive chairman to lead independent director on the same date.

In August 2026, Apple cut more than 200 roles, roughly 100 of them inside the Vision Products Group. The team building games for the headset was largely shut down, and the unit producing Apple Immersive Video, the 180-degree format Apple has used as the platform's showcase content since launch, was reduced. The remaining cuts hit the Siri team and a software group called Intelligent Systems Experience. Apple's statement described the changes as evolving its business to deliver the best experiences for users, and said a limited number of existing roles were affected while new ones would be created.

On 1 September 2026, Gurman reported the cuts had been broader than first understood, reaching Vision Pro staff elsewhere in the company: device security, audio engineering, Siri integration, testing and visionOS itself. Paul Meade, the executive who ran Apple's Vision Pro and smart glasses division, had already left in June 2026, for OpenAI. Gurman's reporting describes people inside the Vision Products Group spending months lobbying Ternus to stay committed to the platform, and characterises Ternus as viewing the headset as too bulky and too expensive to reach a mass audience.

None of that is an obituary. But it is the opposite of a company preparing to launch a second-generation flagship headset.

How many people actually bought one

The commercial picture explains the strategic one. IDC estimated Apple shipped around 390,000 Vision Pro units in 2024, its launch year. For the fourth quarter of 2025, the holiday quarter, weeks after the M5 refresh went on sale, IDC's estimate was roughly 45,000 units. Cumulative sales across the product's life have been reported at around 600,000, a figure worth treating as an estimate rather than a fact, since Apple does not break out Vision Pro numbers.

The wider market was not kind either. Counterpoint Research put the VR headset market down 14% year over year, with Meta's Quest line accounting for roughly 80% of unit sales. Apple never expanded availability much: the headset is sold in about a dozen countries, and it added no meaningful new markets during 2025.

For context on what those numbers mean inside Apple, the company sells more iPhones in a good afternoon than it has sold Vision Pros in total. That is not a moral judgement on the product. The Vision Pro is, by a wide margin, the best-executed headset anyone has shipped. But it does explain why a $3,699 device with two and a half hours of battery is not getting a rushed sequel.

What a genuine next-generation headset would need

Plenty of invented spec lists float around for a Vision Pro sequel. Here is a real one: the things that would actually have to change for a successor to matter, based on the constraints Apple has demonstrably run into.

• Weight below roughly 400 g on the head. The current headset is 750–800 g with the band. Comfort is not a preference at this scale, it is the difference between a device you use for twenty minutes and one you use for two hours. Moving the main chip into an external puck, which is what N224 is reported to do, is the only credible route.
• Battery measured in half-days, not films. Either a much larger pack that is comfortable to carry, or a fundamentally lower-power display and rendering pipeline. Foveated rendering already helps; the panels themselves are the remaining draw.
• A price with a different first digit. $3,699 is an enterprise number. Kuo's cancelled Vision Air target of under $1,750 was the right order of magnitude for a consumer product, and Apple could not make it work for 2027.
• Native content that is not a demo. Cutting the games team and reducing the Apple Immersive Video unit goes the wrong way here. A headset lives or dies on whether there is a reason to put it on at 8pm on a Tuesday.
• Prescription without an adapter tax. Optical inserts are an extra cost and an extra friction point every time somebody else wants to try it.
• Standalone usefulness away from a Mac. Mac Virtual Display is the single most convincing use case for the current device, which is also an admission that the headset is an accessory.

Nothing on that list is exotic. All of it is hard, and Apple's current answer is that glasses will get there before a headset does.

How the "Vision Pro 2" story gets built

The mechanics are worth spelling out, because this is how a lot of bad tech coverage is produced. There was a real, well-sourced rumour about a lighter and cheaper Apple headset with a specific weight target and a specific price target. There was a real chip refresh with real, modest gains. There was a real annual developer conference. Fabricated coverage stitches those three true things together into a fourth thing that never existed, gives it a plausible product name, and attaches numbers that sound like the ones you have read elsewhere.

The tell is usually a timeline that cannot hold itself together. Any spec sheet claiming a WWDC 2026 unveiling and a March 2026 ship date is describing a device that shipped three months before it was announced. If a piece cannot keep its own dates straight, nothing in it has been checked against anything.

So when you read a spec list for an unreleased Apple product, the useful question is not "is this plausible?" but "which primary document is this in?" For Apple hardware there almost always is one, the newsroom release and the technical specifications page, and the absence of one is itself the answer.

Should you buy one in September 2026?

If you have a specific professional reason, such as spatial content production, 3D design review, or an enterprise deployment where the headset replaces something more expensive, the M5 Vision Pro is a mature device on a platform that just received a substantial developer release, and there is no successor to wait for before 2028 at the earliest. Waiting has a real cost and no clear payoff.

If you are a consumer weighing $3,699 against the best-looking display in any headset and two and a half hours of untethered use, I would not. The roadmap news of 2026 is not a reason to panic-buy before the line ends. It is a reason to accept that this is a first-generation-plus-a-half product that Apple itself is deprioritising, and that the interesting Apple face computer is now a pair of glasses somewhere in 2027. Buy the current one for what it does today, not for what a second generation might do. As of September 2026 nobody at Apple has committed to a second generation at all.

FAQ

Is there an Apple Vision Pro 2?

No. As of September 2026 Apple has never announced, unveiled or shipped a product called Vision Pro 2. The current model is still named Apple Vision Pro; it was refreshed with the M5 chip and a Dual Knit Band in October 2025. Reporting indicates a successor code-named N224 exists in testing, but it is not expected before the end of 2028 at the earliest.

What did Apple announce for Vision Pro at WWDC 2026?

Software only. The keynote on 8 June 2026 introduced visionOS 27, with spatial panorama Environments, curved windows, a redesigned Control Center, Visual Intelligence, a new orb-style Siri due later in the year, and a large set of developer APIs including a framework for infrared-tracked accessories. No hardware was announced at WWDC 2026 in any product category.

How much does Apple Vision Pro cost now?

Since 25 June 2026 it is $3,699 for 256GB, $3,899 for 512GB and $4,199 for 1TB in the United States. That is a $200 increase on the 256GB and 512GB tiers and $300 on the 1TB tier, part of an Apple-wide price rise driven by the surging cost of memory and storage chips.

How long does the Vision Pro battery actually last?

Apple's specification page states up to 2.5 hours of general use and up to 3 hours of video playback from the external 353 g battery pack. The headset can be used while the battery is charging, so a wall socket or a power bank effectively removes the limit if you are stationary.

Is the M5 Vision Pro lighter than the original?

No, it is heavier. Apple lists 750-800 g with the Light Seal and the counterbalanced Dual Knit Band, against roughly 600-650 g for the 2024 model with the Solo Knit Band. The new band adds tungsten counterweights, which is why it feels better on the face despite weighing more overall.

When will a new Vision Pro headset arrive?

Nobody outside Apple knows, and the two most reliable sources disagree on whether one is coming at all. Mark Gurman reports a slimmer successor is in testing but does not expect a launch before late 2028 or 2029. Ming-Chi Kuo says the Vision headset line was removed from the roadmap entirely under chief executive John Ternus, leaving only AI smart glasses in 2027 and AR waveguide glasses no earlier than 2029.
